Jeju island Markets – 2025

🍊 Discover the Hidden Charms of Jeju island Traditional Markets!

Jeju island Markets – Our family, the Loro Family, currently lives in the southern part of Jeju Island , near the Jungmun area. We moved here four years ago, driven by our children’s education and sports opportunities, and finally found a home in this beautiful island. Jeju Island has picturesque scenery everywhere.

These days, the trend in travel is to seek the authentic. For us, having already visited the well-known tourist attractions, we now prefer scenic little villages over popular destinations, and a quiet seaside moment with fresh seafood and a glass of soju rather than fancy cafes. So today, I want to introduce some of my favorite places that show you the real Jeju!

Why Explore Beyond Jeju’s Tourist Courses?

Jeju island is often bustling with tourists, but there’s a different side—the local side. These Jeju traditional markets aren’t just shopping places; they are vibrant, living communities. You’ll meet kind locals, taste real local food, and discover goods you can’t find in souvenir shops.

So I decided to skip the usual attractions and dive deep into markets only locals frequent. Trust me, this choice will be worth it! Let me guide you to where the true Jeju experience lives. 😊

Check out Seogwipo’s hidden attractions, too. (Click on the picture to go.)

Jungmun Nonghyup Local Food Mart: Freshness at Its Finest

Located near Jungmun Tourist Complex, this local food market is the best place to buy fresh produce at affordable prices. Jeju tangerines (gamgyul), local greens, and even Jeju black pork cuts like ogyeopsal (pork belly) are available here—perfect for those planning a BBQ during their trip.

They even have a fresh fish counter where you can buy sashimi-grade mackerel, a fish so fresh it’s usually eaten only in Jeju. Daily-caught flounder and red sea bream are also sold as ready-to-eat sashimi meals. Combine this with local veggies and you’ve got yourself a perfect dinner!

Jeju island Markets – Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market: Everyday Local Vibes

If you’re staying in the Seogwipo area, this daily traditional market is a must-visit. Less crowded than Dongmun Market in Jeju island, it’s packed with charming stalls and street-food-style eateries using local specialties. ☕️

Some of my favorites here are the black pork skewers and the kimchi rolls. The energetic vendors give off such a warm vibe—true Jeju hospitality! You’ll also find dried seafood like tilefish, cutlassfish, octopus, and local handmade snacks and crafts—perfect for souvenirs.

Seogwipo Suhyup Fish Market: The Best of Jeju’s Morning

I was hesitant to share this place because it’s one of my hidden gems—but here it is! The Seogwipo Fisheries Cooperative Market is where daily fish auctions are held, and what’s not sold at auction gets offered to the public at very low prices.

On lucky days, I’ve bought whole boxes of fresh squid or rare fan lobsters. It’s truly one of the best ways to experience Jeju’s morning life. I often send these home to family on the mainland—they make amazing gifts. The quality and freshness are unbeatable!

Seogwipo Hyangto 5-Day Market: A Local Food Paradise

Open only on the 4th and 9th of each month, this is Seogwipo’s largest 5-day traditional market. It’s a haven for food lovers. From hearty meat noodle soups and turban shell (bommal) kalguksu, to rich and savory sundae (blood sausage) stew—every bite tastes homemade.

Especially the sundae soup served in one small corner of the market—it’s so good, it demands a glass of makgeolli! You’ll also find a wide range of citrus fruits (tangerine, hallabong, red hyang) which they can ship directly to your home. Great for fresh gifts!

Daejeong 5-Day Market (Mosulpo): Authentic West Jeju Vibes

Jeju island Markets – Held on the 1st and 6th of each month, this market represents the heart of West Jeju. Locals call it Mosulpo 5-Day Market, and it’s as traditional as it gets. You’ll see old-style stalls selling everything from hotteok and skewers to steamed pork head and intestines.

Don’t miss the local Jeju snacks like omegitteok and bingtteok. This market is filled with surprises and is a cultural feast in itself.

Hidden Foodie Spots Near the Markets

Here are some of my favorite underrated foodie gems around the markets. (Leave a comment and I’ll send you the exact names! 😉)

  • Haejang-guk in Sagye-ri: The best offal soup I’ve ever had. Deep, flavorful broth. 🥹
  • Bommal Kal-guksu in Jungmun: Unlike any other, the broth is thick and rich, and the noodles made with seaweed are addictively savory. Use the “Tableling” app to reserve—it gets busy early!
  • Sundae Soup near Seogwipo 5-Day Market: It’s so good that the restaurant had to relocate to a bigger space. There’s always a wait, but it’s worth it! 💎
